Birth place of the Holy Prophet (s). The Saudi govt. have turned it into a library
On this mound once stood the house of the 4th Imam (a) in Makkah. He was here when he got the news that Mukhtar had killed Hurmala. That was the first time he smiled after Karbala. Behind this is the house where the Prophet (s) was born (see prev. pic.) This whole area was generally known as "Mahal-e-Banu Hashim". It is now called "Suq al-Layl"
The underground car park (built by the Saudi govt.) seen here is where the valley (shi'b) of Abu Talib was. In the early days of Islam, the Prophet (s) with his family & followers were isolated here by the Quraysh. To the left of this is the birth place of the Prophet (s) & behind the photographer are the gates to Safa-Marwa (Masjid al-Haram)
Entrance to Maqbarah al-Mualla also known as "Jannat al-Mualla"
Inside Jannat al-Mualla. Behind the white wall where you see people standing is where the Prophet's (s) family members are buried i.e. Abu Talib (a), Abdul Muttalib (a), Sayyida Khadija (a), etc. Looking through the grilled windows on the wall, one can see a white rectangle on the ground (partially visible in the 2nd pic). This is the grave of Ummul Mu'mineen Sayyida Khadija (a), the wife of the Prophet (s) & mother of Sayyida Fatima az-Zahra (a)
Jabal Abu Qubays. The building facing Masjid al-Haram that you see here is the palace of the King of Saudi Arabia. Before, this was the Mount of Abu Qubays. After building the Ka'aba, Nabi Ibrahim (a) stood on this mountain & called mankind to come & worship Allah. When the Holy Prophet (s) first started preaching Islam publicly, he stood on Jabal Abu Qubays & called mankind to submit to Allah. The Prophet's (s) miracle of splitting the moon was also see at the top of this mountain. At the top was a small mosque - Masjid Bilal - & until recently people used to climb to the top for ziyarat. As this was a security threat after the palace was built, the govt. demolished the mosque. Notice also that the gate of Masjid al-Haram facing the palace has only one minaret (instead of 2) because it was blocking the King's view of the Ka'aba from his bedroom.

When Imam Ali (a) married the Prophet's (s) daughter Sayyida az-Zahra (a), they first lived in a house on this open ground facing the mihrab of Masjid Quba (that can be seen behind). Their house was near the palm tree & next to theirs was the house of the Prophet's companion Hudhaifa al-Yamani. The Saudi govt. have demolished both houses & leveled the ground.
This is the hill of Uhud that some Muslim archers abandoned for the sake of booty because of which several Muslims were martyred. At the back of the photographer is the gate of the enclosure where Hamza (a) & the other martyrs are buried.
Hamza, the uncle of the Prophet (s), was martyred at Uhud at the foot of this hill. Some say this is the reason why the rock at the foot of the hill is red in colour as compared to the rest of the hill.
The small mosque ahead is the "maqam" (place of prayer) of the 4th & 6th Imam (a). Behind the photographer is the enclosure where the martyrs of Uhud are buried.
When the Muslims returned from Uhud to Madina, some of them were severely injured. The Prophet (s) took the clay from this ditch & applied it on their wounds as "shifa" hence the concept of "khak-e-shifa"

Part of the Garden of Fadak (behind Masjid Fadheek)
"Bir-e-Ali" or the Well of Ali (a). When returning from an expedition, the army of Imam Ali (a) once ran out of water. He dug this well from which water continues to flow even today. This place is not too far from Masjid Shajarah (Miqat)
The fort of Khaybar that Imam Ali (a) conquered against the Jews. Khaybar is over 100 kms outside Madina.
"Bayt al-Huzn" (The House of Sorrow) where Imam Zayn-ul-Abidin (a) used to come & weep after the tragedy of Karbala. (The Bayt al-Huzn of Sayyida Fatima (a) has been completed demolished by the Saudi govt.). This house is in the garden of Salman, the Prophet's (a) companion. Salman was a slave working in this date farm before the Prophet (a) freed him.

This is the well from which Imam Ali (a) drew water to wash the Prophet's (s) body before burying him. The well is now closed. It is not too far from Salman's garden.
The university of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a). This is the place where he taught different sciences to over 4,000 students. The place has been neglected & is now sealed off. It is not possible to enter the building.
Inside structure of the university of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a). This picture was taken through a crevice in the wall.
The white house with a blue top border is called "Bayt Bint al-Yahud". Sayyida Fatima az-Zahra (a) once attended the wedding of a Jewish lady here. The bride died & with the prayers of Sayyida (a), she came back to life.
