Imam Hassan

Sayyiduna Imam Hassan bin Ali (radi Allahu anhu), Excerpts from Tarikh al-Khulafa by Imam Jalal-ud-Din Suyuti (alaihir rahmah).

Abu Muhammad Imam Hassan ibn Ali ibn Abu Talib (radi Allahu anhu), the grandson of Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was born on the 15th of Ramadan, the third year after hijrah.

Imam Bukhari reports from Hazrat Anas (radi Allahu anhu): "No one resembled the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) more than Hassan ibn Ali (radi Allahu anhu)".

Imam Bukhari & Imam Muslim report from Hazrat Bara'a (radi Allahu anha): I have seen Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) with Hassan upon his shoulder, saying: "O Allah I love him, so (Ye) love him too".

Imam Bukhari reports from Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (radi Allahu anhu): I have seen Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) on the pulpit (minbar) with Hassan on his side. He looked at the assembly & Hassan alternately & said: "Verily, this son of mine is a great leader. Mayhap that Allah will unite two groups of Muslims on his account."

Imam Bukhari reports from Hazrat ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu): "Both Hassan & Hussain are my two perfumes in this world".

Hakim reports from Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu), that Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was once carrying Hassan on his shoulders. A man met him on the way & said: "What a magnificent mount that you ride young man." Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) replied, "What a magnificent rider is he!"

Ibn Saad reports from Abdullah ibn Zubayr (radi Allahu anhum): Hassan ibn Ali (radi Allahu anhu) resembled Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) the most in his family & was the dearest to him. I have seen him (Hassan) ride upon Rasool Allah's neck (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) - or he said back - when he was in prostration & Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) wouldn't arise until Hassan dismounted himself. I have seen him "Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam)" in ruku when Hasan would crawl by his feet. Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would let him go between his legs to the other side."

Imam Hassan (radi Allahu anhu) was a man of many qualities; he was a leader of men, forbearing & patient, a man of dignity & sobriety, staid & demure & very generous. He disliked war & fighting. He would give away a hundred thousand (as a present or charity) without giving it a thought.

Hakim reports from Abdullah ibn Ubayd ibn Umayr (radi Allahu anhum): "Hassan went on Hajj twenty-five times on foot, even though very fine camels were driven alongside."

Imam Hassan (radi Allahu anhu) became the caliph after his father was martyred, by the allegiance of the Kufans. He remained such for six months & a few more days & then Imam Hassan sent an envoy seeking peace & wished to renounce the post in favor of Hazrat Mu'awiyah (radi Allahu anhu). After this, Imam Hassan left Kufah & retired to Madinah.

Hakim reports from Jubayr ibn Nufayr (radi Allahu anhu): I said to Hassan, "people say that you desire the caliphate." He replied: "I had Arab warriors at my command to fight whom I did & befriend those 1 wished; but I renounced war, seeking to please Allah & to avert spilling the blood of the followers of Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) just for the sake of power."

Ibn Saad reports from Imran ibn Abdullah ibn Talha (radi Allahu anhum): Imam Hassan saw in his dream as if "Qul huwa Allahu Ahad" was written between his eyes. When this dream was related to Sa'eed ibn al-Musayyib (Radi Allahu Anhu), he interpreted: "If this dream is true, then his death is very near". He lived for only a few days after this event.

Imam Hassan (radi Allahu anhu) died in Madinah Munawwarah after he was poisoned in the year 49 AH. It is said that he died on the 5th of Rabi al-Awwal, 50 AH. It is also said that it was in 51 AH. Imam Hussain (radi Allahu anhu), his brother entreated him to name the poisoner; Imam Hassan (radi Allahu anhu) declined & said: "If it is the one I suspect, Allah shall take that person into account. If not, I do not wish that an innocent is killed on my account".

Imam Tirmidhi & Hakim report from Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (radi Allahu anhu): Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said: "Hassan & Hussain are the two leaders of young men in paradise".

Imam Tirmidhi reports from Usamah ibn Zayd (radi Allahu anhu): I saw Hassan & Hussain on the lap of Rasool Allah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) & he said: "These two are my children, my grandsons. O Allah I love them; (You) love them too & love all those who love them".

Ala Hazrat, Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (alaihir rahmah) has explained it beautifully:
Kya baat Raza us chamanistaan-e-karam ki;
Zahra hai kali jisme Hussain aur Hassan phool.

Raza! Imagine how unique is that garden of Compassion;
Wherein the bud is Zahra & the flowers are Hussain & Hassan. (radi Allahu anhum)

Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam wa 'Ala Alihi wa Sahbihi Wa Baraka Wa karam
